Overrides: product, collection & tag rules

Not everything ships on the same schedule. Overrides give specific items their own timeline without touching your global rule. Growth

What an override can change

An override targets a product, a collection, or a tag, and can adjust:

  • Extra processing days — e.g. +5 days for made-to-order items. Added on top of your global processing time, still respecting dispatch days and holidays.
  • Fixed processing time — replace the global value entirely (e.g. exactly 10 business days for engraved items).
  • Custom widget text — e.g. “Made to order for you — ships in about a week”.
  • Hide the widget — for digital products or gift cards where a delivery date makes no sense.

Worked example: made-to-order products

  1. In your Shopify admin, tag the relevant products made-to-order (Products → select → Add tag).
  2. In ShipsBy → Settings → Overrides, click Add override.
  3. Target: Tagmade-to-order.
  4. Adjustment: +5 processing days.
  5. Save.

Result: a store with 1 processing day and 2–4 day transit shows regular items as arriving in roughly 3–5 days, while anything tagged made-to-order automatically shows a window about 5 business days later. New products get the behavior the moment you tag them — no per-product setup.

Priority: which rule wins?

When several overrides could apply to the same product, ShipsBy applies exactly one — the most specific:

Only the winning override is applied; overrides never stack with each other.
PriorityRule typeExample
1 (highest)Product override“Oak Dining Table” → fixed 15 processing days
2Tag overridemade-to-order → +5 days
3Collection override“Furniture” → +2 days
4 (fallback)Global ruleYour base delivery rule

If two overrides of the same type match (e.g. a product is in two overridden collections), the one with the longer resulting estimate wins — the honest choice, since under-promising beats over-promising.

Zones still apply. Overrides adjust processing; the visitor's zone still determines transit. A made-to-order +5 days item shipped to a 6–12 day zone shows both delays combined.

Good practices

  • Prefer tags over per-product overrides — they scale as your catalog grows.
  • Keep the list short. If more than a third of your catalog is overridden, your global rule is probably wrong — fix it in configuration instead.
  • Use the live preview's product picker to verify which rule wins for a given product.
